This page contains a summary of my 'longer' trips since 1995, the year I
started my long distance walking 'career':-) After I finished
the gr5 and completed the top-3 of my trekking wishlist
I started in 2005, together with my work at the university, a career as
I stopped guiding in 2014 after an encounter with polar bears in Greenland.
I'm also a Munro bagger. Currently I climbed
Finally I also coordinate the weekend backpacking trips for the
program and organize a couple of trips myself.
Lots of plans this year. But we start with a Snowshoe trip in the Fanes Sennes / Drei Zinnen area of the Dolomites.
In the Easter weekend I will organize a 3 day
along the river Nahe in Germany.
In spring we will visit the USA again. This time we will be hiking on the Colorado Plateau and Yellowstone and do some longer backpacking trips in the Canyonlands "Island in the Sky" and "Needles" districts!
At the end of the summer we went to Sweden and walked the beautifull and relaxing
Hoga Kusten Trail
In the spring we did some great hikes on the Colorado Plateau. We did Grand Canyon/Horseshoe Mesa, Zion/East Rim - Cable Mountian, Paria/Buckskin Gulch
and the Boulder Mail Trail - Death Hollow - Escalante river trek.
In september we visited the Pyrenees and trekked near Lescun/Pic d'Anie/Val Hecho, around the Néouvielle massif, and the Ordesa Canyons again.
In december we were skiing in Le Corbier, the north side of the Ecrins and were lucky to have snow.
At the end of januari I joined a small group to the Ukranian Karpaty mountains for my first snowshoe trip! A spectacular video of the 2 day trek to the Pip Ivan observatory can be found
- This summer I guided the HT
Oost Groenland trek for the second time.
I think this is possibly the most
trek in the Arctic.
- In october I guided the HT
Tibet Everest Kangshung trek.
The last week of september I organized a walk in the vineyards and forests of the
Around Christmas and New Year we went to Glencoe in Scotland and bagged 3 more
In october I did the
HT Dolpo trek. In 4 weeks from the low Terai to the high
Do Tarap Valley and
. We had lots of rain and there was too much snow at higher elevations but it was again very beautiful. A video of this trip is 'in the making'.
In june I guided the
Hekla & Landmannalaugar
trek in Iceland for the second time; back to 10 days of wild walking between lava, steam-vents, ice-caps, hot baths and ice-cold rivers.

- In may I cycled from Maastricht to Basel using this
by Paul Benjaminse.
- Around Christmas I cycled in 5 weeks around New Zealand's South Island.
- In september I guided the HT
trip to the Atacama high altitude desert in Northern Chile. We first acclimatized in the San Pedro de Atacama area and then did the a 10 day trek, entirely above 4000 meter, along the Bolivian border from Colchane to Parinacota.

In the summer I visited the Scoresby Sund with Liverpool- and Jameson Land guiding the HT
trek. We saw lots of muskoxes but no polar bear this time.

- In october I did the epic 5 week
trek in Nepal.
I think it was the best trip I ever did in Nepal.
I created a short video with hightlights of the trip on YouTube
plus a "Google Earth" overflight video.
- In the spring I cycled from Vancouver to the Mexican border near San Diego over the Pacific Coast cycling route.
Spitsbergen 2008/Dickson Island, descending Ragnarbreen.
- In september I cycled from Enschede to the Mediterranean Sea near Cap Agde.
- In july I guided the HT
trip for the second time.
This time I also completed the very spectacular circuit on Dickson Island.
- In may I did the
Manaslu "The hard way" trip in Nepal, a 23 day trek around the Manaslu (8201m) in Central Nepal crossing the Rupina La en the Larkya La.
- In the summer I guided the HT trek to
Sermalik Fjord on the east coast of Greenland.

- In spring I did the kora around
Mount Kailash the holy mountain in West Tibet. We aproached the mountain from the Humla district in Nepal trekking along the Karnali river.
We returned through the very remote Limi vally in Nepal.
On the flanks of Mt. Kailash we spotted a group of snowleopards. My pictures of

- In september I cycled 2 weeks over the long distance cycle route
"R1" from Enschede to Berlin.
- In july guided this years HT trip to
where it it was very cold this year so the North Pole will probably not melt this(!) year.
In june did another mountaineering course in the Stubai Alps in Austria
at the Sulzenau Hutte.
- In may I walked a new section of my foot trip to Rome. I walked 330 km from Montabaur in the Westerwald to Pforzheim in the 'Schwarzwald' over the E1, Rheinhohenweg, E8 Pfalzer Wald variant and back to the E1 again.
The last 2 weeks of the year I have been walking on the isles of La Palma and La Gomera.

We walked in 5 days from Dana to Petra and did a 2 day trek in Wadi Rum
In august I guided a backpacking trip to the very remote
This area, called "Russia's ring of fire", is located in the extreme east of
Russia and is famous for it's vulcanos and its wildlife.

Around Christmas and New Year I went with a group to
Mauritanie (link fails)
for a 300km walk through the Sahara from Terjit to Tijika over the incredibly
beautiful and remote Adrar and Tagant plateaus. Because of the security
situation in the country the trip is not in the program anymore
In october I did an experimental trip
to the Nanda Devi
massif in Nortern India. We walked from Mundoli to Roop Kund and after that over
Kuari Pass to Josimath. Secondly we did a lower than planned trek
because of the early winter on which we visited the Rudrenath and Tugnath

trek; 10 days of very wild walking between lava, steam-vents, ice-caps, hot baths and ice-cold rivers.
In the spring I went Munro bagging in Nortern Scotland where I added
another 35 to my collection. My total now is 53. We visited Glen Lyon,
Torridon and the south side of the Cairngorms.
Pakistan 2004, trekking on the Baltoro Glacier beneath the mighty Gasherbrun IV
- Late October 2 weeks of good weather in Southern Spain. Walked in the
Alpujarras, climbed Mulhacen and did a lot of walking in the
beautiful and sunny Cabo da Gata park near Almeria.
In the summer I did the
K2 and Gondogoro-La
trek in the beautiful Karakoram mountains of Pakistan.

- In May to 3 weeks in the Sierra de Cadi in Nortern Spain. Lots of snow in the higher parts. Climbed the Pedraforca and 2 other mountains near Saldes.
The last 2 weeks of october I've been walking the West Highland Way in
Scotland and have climbed my first 18 Munros along the way.

from Modane to Nice. Finished my
longest walk to date. I walked a total of 2400 kilometer in 9 years on this route.
Motorcycle trip in the spring. In two weeks via the Vogezen to the Southern Provence and back.
- The month of April hiking on the Colorado plateau in the USA. Main treks
were Coyote Gulch(Escalante), Chesler Park(Canyonlands NP), Neon/Escalante/Harris Canyon
loop(Escalante) and finally the famous Paria Canyon trek.
In may 2 weeks through Arizona and the

Start of september we went hiking in the Catalan Pyrenees. We did 4 multiday treks.
The areas we hiked in were the Aguies Tortes, Posets and Maladeta and the
beautifull Ordesa - Gavarnie area.
- I had lots of plans for 2000 but 13'th of May I was victim of the Enschede
fireworks disaster. We live some 300 meter from the explosion centre and our
house was hit very bad. Some pictures of the damage to my house, car and
street can be found here. We lived in Borne for a half
Luckily we could find some time for vacation so we made a 3 week long
motortrip to Corsica.
- GR5, traject Pontarlier - La Chapelle d'Abondance (Alps).
- GR5 traject Barr - Pontarlier (Jura).
- A trek of 10 days in the French and Spanish Pyrenees around Gavarnie
spending most of the time in the beautiful Ordesa National park.

- Patagonia trip, in december and januari I
went to Southern Chili and Argentinia with a group of the
NKBV, the dutch mountaineering association.
We hiked the "Lago Dientes circuit" on Isla Navarino, the "Circuit" in the
Torres del Paine NP and a trek along the edge of Fitzroy and Cerro Torre
in the Los Glaciaros NP in Argentina.
During this trip I wrote a diary (dutch, 150K).

- Jerez the la Frontera, to the last Formula I race of 1997. Approx. 6000 km
on an off-the-road motorcycle.
- Pieterpad, Holten - Maastricht.
- Nepal-Tibet trip, this document describes my trip
to Nepal and Tibet in 1996. The first 4 weeks I trekked from Jiri to
Everest Base Camp and crossed over Cho La to Gokyo valley.
The last 2 weeks I made a trip over
the Friendship Highway to Lhasa.

- A short trip to the Eastern Sierra's along the 395 in Eastern California.
Lake Tahoe, Mono Lake and a short walk at the foot of Mt.Whitney.
- Alaska, We travelled 6 weeks in this beautiful part of the world. From
Seattle we went to Prince Rupert. There we took the boat through the
"Inside Passage" to Juneau, Sitka, Haines and finally Skagway. From there we
travelled overland to Valdez from where we took the boat to Kodiak. After
that we went to Homer, Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali etc ....
